Senators introduce bill to abolish conscription
A bipartisan group of senators has introduced a bill to abolish the military draft. The bill, introduced Thursday by Sens. Rand Paul (R-Kentucky), Ron Wyden (D-Oregon) and Cynthia Lummis (R-Wyo.), calls conscription an “outdated” government program that no longer serves any purpose. It would repeal the Military Selective Service Act, also known as conscription. First passed in 1917 to supplement military service during World War I, the law requires all Americans to serve in the military.

Senate committee adds $21 billion to defense bill
The Senate Appropriations Committee on Thursday passed a bill that would add $21 billion to the defense budget, responding to calls for increased investments in national security while rejecting spending caps agreed to by House Republicans and the Biden administration last year. The Senate bill passed this week includes $852.2 billion for the Department of Defense, up from $833 billion for the Department of Defense passed in 2015.
