War Secretary Swears in New Recruits in Los Angeles
During his “Arsenal of Freedom Tour,” War Secretary Pete Hegseth officially swore in 40 new military recruits from the West Coast. This event took place at the Los Angeles Military Entrance Processing Station (LA MEPS) on January 9, 2026.
The tour, described as “a monthlong call to action,” aims to bolster America’s manufacturing capabilities and invigorate the workforce within the defense sector. Hegseth’s journey began earlier on January 5 at a shipyard in Newport News, Virginia.
“I’m honored to be here with you, and I’m grateful to the families, because they clearly raised great Americans,” Hegseth expressed to the new enlistees and their loved ones. He promised that the military would back them, ensuring they are equipped and prepared for their roles while emphasizing the importance of rebuilding military strength and restoring the warrior ethos.
Hegseth continued, “Looking at this room of young Americans, I see the best of our country. My role as Secretary of War is to serve your commanders and those who train you, so that you are ready when the time comes. We’ve got your back.”
Wishing the recruits luck in their training, he remarked, “You’re about to join the greatest fighting force the world has ever seen,” conveying a sense of pride and anticipation for their future endeavors.
Videos of Hegseth’s interactions with the recruits have surfaced online, showcasing his emphasis on a “fit, not fat” approach to military readiness.
One clip featured Hegseth, 45, engaging in weightlifting alongside recruits performing exercises like push-ups, tagged with the message, “FROM THE TOP DOWN—WE WILL BE FIT, NOT FAT.”
In another video, Hegseth spoke to recruits, clad in Army and Navy shirts, stressing the significance of physical training to cultivate good habits right from the start.
“The basics matter. Being prepared and fit is crucial. You will be young officers leading by example,” he advised.
He reiterated, “You’re joining a force that will rank as the most powerful globally, driven by the dedication of the men and women leading it.”
