Homeland Security Secretary Responds to Senator’s Critique

During a Senate Appropriations Committee hearing on June 2, Secretary of Homeland Security Markwayne Mullin confronted Democratic Senator Patrick Murphy from Connecticut over his assertion that government agencies are engaged in “massive violation of the law.”

“Wow, Senator Murphy, those claims you made are simply false,” Mullin remarked, emphasizing that the Department is fulfilling the responsibilities set by Congress. He pointed out that law enforcement operates within the legal framework established by lawmakers.

“We are doing the job Congress authorized us to do, and the people enforce the laws every day. If you don’t like the law, you can change it. We are not choosing the laws we enforce. We are simply enforcing the law. Period. Full stop,” he stated, challenging Murphy’s accusations of recklessness and danger in their operations.

Mullin noted that such incendiary language has led to a drastic increase of 8,000% in death threats against border agents, attributing this rise to the political rhetoric surrounding these discussions. He raised concerns about attacks on law enforcement, speculating on statistics he wasn’t entirely sure of but acknowledged the trend was troubling.

Murphy has frequently shown a tendency to prioritize immigrants and their employers over the concerns of everyday Americans. In February 2024, he suggested that past Democratic strategies had neglected the needs of those most affected, particularly undocumented individuals.

This year, Murphy introduced legislation aimed at expanding economic migration opportunities via asylum loopholes. While critics argue this would benefit his backers, it could lead to reduced wages and increased housing costs for many citizens.

Mullin also admonished Murphy’s political aspirations, saying, “If you have bigger political ambitions, feel free to share them, but don’t do it at the expense of my officers.” He highlighted the underfunding of agencies like Customs and Border Protection and Immigration and Customs Enforcement, painting a picture of a past administration that allowed chaos at the borders.

“We are a nation of laws and intend to enforce those laws,” he asserted, urging transparency about border security priorities. “If you don’t want to fund Customs and Border Protection…let’s be honest with the American people and say, ‘We want our borders open.’ Don’t sit there and touch things that you know aren’t true.”
