Devon Murphy Anderson, the Executive Director of the Maine Democratic Party, has made it clear that Graham Platner, the Democratic Senate candidate, will not have any say in selecting his successor.
In a video message, Murphy Anderson emphasized that Platner should consider stepping down after a woman accused him of entering her home and sexually assaulting her.
Platner’s team has been in touch with the party to understand the process for naming a replacement for the Senate nomination.
“The Maine Democratic Party is dedicated to establishing a transparent and fair procedure for replacing U.S. Senate candidates. We want to make sure Democrats throughout the state trust both the process and the outcome,” she stated in her update.
She added, “Sadly, Mr. Platner’s team has continuously contacted us to figure out what this replacement process entails. We have made it clear multiple times that they will not play a part in choosing the next Democratic nominee or shaping the process.” Murphy Anderson reiterated their request for Platner to withdraw.
“We have also insisted that Graham Platner must leave this race so Maine Democrats can concentrate on defeating Susan Collins this November. We’re eager to disclose this process to the public once Platner officially steps back.”

These calls for Platner to resign have intensified following new rape allegations and claims from a former girlfriend who asserted that he removed a condom during intercourse. Platner had initially mentioned that his team was taking time to “consider the best path forward for the state I love, the people I care about, and the goal of defeating Susan Collins.”
In the meantime, his campaign is still on the lookout for a research director, as noted in a Daybook post from July 7.
The job listing specifies that ideal candidates should be highly organized, possess experience with federal election campaigns, and have a sharp, analytical approach to political strategy. Monthly salaries are expected to range from $7,000 to $11,000.
Several key Democrats who initially backed Platner have since retracted their support, including Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and Representative Ro Khanna.
