See: 'Golden Orb' Discovered in 2023 Deep Sea Exploration has been Identified

The recent discovery in the depths of the Gulf of Alaska has led to the identification of a puzzling “golden ball.”

This intriguing object was found during a 2023 deep-sea expedition that utilized a remote-controlled vehicle, diving over two miles below the surface, as reported on Thursday.

Researchers from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History have confirmed that this sphere is actually the remains of a giant deep-sea sea anemone named Relicanthus daphnea.

According to NOAA, “It was part of a sea anemone that was attached to a rocky substrate.” In a statement released Wednesday, they noted that while most discovered organisms are quickly identified, some, like this golden orb, can take time to classify.

When first discovered, the researchers contemplated whether it was an egg case, a dead sponge, or even a shelter for some creature. They collected the object using a vacuum sampler and sent it to the Smithsonian’s National Museum of Natural History (NMNH).

The agency elaborated that scientists from NOAA Fisheries and the Smithsonian employed an integrated taxonomic approach, analyzing both the structure and genetic makeup of the sphere. Initial evaluations indicated that it lacked typical animal anatomy, but was made of a fibrous material with a layered surface packed with cnidocytes, suggesting it belonged to cnidarians, like corals or sea anemones. Abigail Left, a scientist at the US National Institute for Systematic Systematics, identified the cells as spirocysts, associated specifically with the cnidarian genus Hexacoraria. They also examined similar specimens collected during a 2021 expedition aboard the research vessel Falkor and noted the presence of similar cnidocytes.

Initial DNA barcoding didn’t yield clear results, likely due to contamination from other microscopic life forms on the samples. However, deeper whole-genome sequencing confirmed the presence of large amounts of genetic material from giant deep-sea sea anemones, with mitochondrial genome sequencing showing that the specimens were nearly genetically identical to the existing Relicanthus daphneae reference genome.

This finding certainly highlights the ocean’s vast and enigmatic nature.

Video footage captured the moment scientists encountered the sphere, noting their fascination but uncertainty—one remarked, “You look like a sponge.”

William Mowitt, Acting Director of NOAA Ocean Exploration, spoke on Wednesday about the deep sea’s wonders. “Exploring deep waters often uncovers remarkable mysteries, like the ‘golden sphere.’ With advancements in technology, such as DNA sequencing, we’ll continue to solve these mysteries,” he stated. “This is why we persist in exploring: to unveil the secrets of the deep sea and enhance our understanding of how our oceans and their resources can foster economic growth, bolster national security, and sustain our planet.”
