Border Official Discusses Immigration Costs
On Tuesday, Tom Homan, a former border official, highlighted the taxpayer expenses linked to illegal immigration under the Biden administration while discussing the “Crocodile Alcatraz” facility in Florida with Chris Cuomo from News Nation. The new facility is expected to provide 5,000 beds at a cost of $450 million.
During the segment, Homan pointed out the costs associated with housing illegal immigrants, contrasting them with the previous administration’s approach. “Let’s remember,” he said, “they put illegal aliens in hotel rooms in New York City for $500 a night. That’s right—$500 per immigrant each night.” He added that this figure didn’t include food, legal assistance, or medical care, which were additional expenses incurred.
Amid increasing illegal immigration, the Biden administration has been allocating funds to states grappling with the situation. In August 2024, more than $380 million was approved by Biden’s Department of Homeland Security for FEMA’s Shelter and Services Program in various communities.
In April 2024 alone, approximately $260 million in grants were distributed through the Shelter and Services Program, alongside over $780 million provided in 2023 for related programs.
Homan noted that the cost structure for the Crocodile Alcatraz facility includes three meals a day and on-site medical staff, explaining that this creates a comprehensive care environment. He mentioned logistical advantages as well, citing air transportation access that enhances efficiency for moving individuals to different locations.
In 2023, New York City reportedly spent around $1.45 billion on immigration efforts, indicating the substantial financial burden on sanctuary cities under the current administration’s policies.
Homan elaborated on the efficiencies provided by the Florida facility, pointing out its ability to conduct immigration hearings and serve as a transport hub for deportations. He asserted that these developments could lead to cost savings compared to previous management approaches.
Notably, the Trump administration had emphasized stringent measures against illegal immigration, leading to over 20,000 arrests reported by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement in 2025.
