The horse Sovereignty triumphed in the 2025 Kentucky Derby, making a strategic move after rounding the final turn that outpaced the favored contender, Journalism.
While Journalism had seemed nearly unbeatable during its last four races, it just couldn’t maintain the energy needed for the full stretch of the Derby, which is 10 furlongs long. Baeza also had a strong performance, mirroring his previous showing in the Santa Anita Derby, but ultimately finished right behind Journalism.
Sovereignty had a bit of a setback in the Florida Derby but showed great closing speed, and the added distance at Churchill Downs proved advantageous for him.
