Segway recalls 220K scooters after consumers report injuries, including broken bones

Officials say that nearly 150,000 Segway scooters are recalled due to safety hazards.

The recall was announced Thursday by the US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC). The recall relates to all 220,000 units of the Segway Ninebot Max G30p and Max G30LP kick scooters.

According to the CPSC, a recall was issued due to the folding mechanism of the model, but this could be a failure.

“The folding mechanism fails and the handlebar or stem folds while the scooter is in use, poses a fall risk to the consumer,” the notification states.

As of Thursday, Segway has received 68 reports of failures in the folding mechanism. These caused about 20 injuries, ranging from abrasions and bruises to “lapping and fractures.”

Segway advises owners of recalled scooters to stop using them “quickly.”

“Consumers must immediately stop using recalled scooters, contact Segway to receive information, determine if adjustments are required in the folding mechanism, and receive a free maintenance kit,” the recall notice states.

“The kit includes tools and instructions to check, tighten and maintain the folding mechanism properly.”

CPSC also noted that vehicles manufactured in China and Malaysia were selling for $600 to $1,000 from January 2020 to February 2025. Consumers were able to purchase devices at Best Buy, Costco, Walmart, Target, Sam's Club, Segway.com and Amazon.com.

The CPSC also includes a physical description of the scooter in case the Segway owners are unsure if they own the recalled model.

“The maximum G30LP kick scooter is gray with yellow accents, while the maximum G30p is black with yellow accents,” the press release explained. “The brand name “Ninebot” appears at the top of the foot platform and handlebar. The model number is located on the label on the side of the foot deck. ”

“The maximum G30p model is 46 inches long, 19 inches wide, 47 inches tall and weighs 42 pounds,” the release continued. “The maximum G30LP model is 44 inches long, 19 inches wide, 45 inches tall and weighs 39 pounds.”

Fox Business has contacted Segway for additional information.
