Sen. Cassidy Supports Trump's Health Care Funding Proposal

Senator Cassidy Backs Trump’s Proposal on Healthcare Funds

Senator Bill Cassidy, a Republican from Louisiana and a practicing physician, supports President Donald Trump’s suggestion to direct Affordable Care Act funds to Americans rather than insurance companies.

On Wednesday, Trump proposed that substantial amounts of Affordable Care Act subsidy money be given directly to individuals. This approach, he argued, would allow people to “buy their own healthcare,” suggesting that this method would be more effective and less costly than what’s often called “Obamacare.”

“Current Obamacare policies have incredibly high deductibles—around $6,000. While Democrats push to lower premiums, reducing the cost of something that already has such a large deductible turns it into essentially a catastrophic plan,” Cassidy explained when he appeared on CBS’s “Face the Nation” last Sunday.

According to Cassidy, Trump’s idea involves taking the $26 billion intended for insurance companies and instead providing it directly to the public. This would allow individuals to use the entire amount to “purchase the health care on their own terms.”

He noted that this approach empowers consumers, allowing them to make informed choices. It could also create better options for covering high deductibles, giving patients the ability to select plans with higher deductibles and, subsequently, lower premiums. “This creates a situation where patients become more informed consumers,” he remarked.

Cassidy emphasized his and Trump’s shared vision regarding this proposal, indicating a sense of unity. When questioned whether they aimed to repair or completely discard Obamacare, he replied that a new healthcare model where patients actively engage in their care is essential.

Having spent two decades working in a hospital for the uninsured, Cassidy noted, “When patients are given the power to make decisions, positive outcomes often follow. The medical literature supports this: engaged patients tend to be wiser shoppers for their healthcare needs.”
