Senate Intelligence Committee Chairman Calls for Investigation of Comey’s Social Media Post
Senator Tom Cotton (R-AR), the chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee, has officially urged FBI Director Kash Patel to look into a recent post by former FBI Director James Comey. Comey’s social media message, which featured the enigmatic phrase “86 47,” has raised eyebrows and prompted concerns.
Comey, who was appointed by former President Barack Obama and served until being dismissed by Trump in 2017, posted the message on Instagram on Thursday along with photos of shells arranged to display the numbers.
The term “86” is commonly used in various contexts, particularly in the hospitality and military sectors, suggesting cancellation of orders or even related to severe actions. After Comey’s post sparked accusations of inciting violence against the president, he deleted it and issued a statement explaining that he had merely found the shells on a beach and had not intended any violent implication.
Director Patel acknowledged the concerns raised by Comey’s post, relaying that the FBI’s role would be supportive alongside the Secret Service and its director. Patel affirmed that the Secret Service would primarily handle the situation.
Homeland Security Secretary Christa Noem confirmed on social media that the Department of Homeland Security along with the Secret Service would investigate the perceived threat.
During a recent appearance on Fox News, Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard suggested that Comey should face serious consequences for what he termed a direct threat to the president.
On Friday, Cotton reached out to Patel in a letter, requesting to verify all FBI actions involving Comey. He noted that Comey had been involved in politically charged investigations and indicated a bias against Trump and his supporters.
Cotton highlighted Trump’s own reaction to Comey’s post, stating that, according to the president, “86 47” was a clear reference to assassination. Trump mentioned that such a term should have been recognizable even to an experienced former director of the FBI.
In his correspondence, Cotton cited the president’s remarks, emphasizing that Comey was fully aware of the implications behind his words.
The senator expressed appreciation for the quick response by the Secret Service and the FBI’s support in the investigation. A senior official remarked that Cotton’s inquiry is just the start of a deeper investigation into Comey’s actions. They noted that Comey’s recent statements raise serious questions about the responsibilities of his former position.
Another source hinted that if Comey does not comply with a subpoena, he might face legal repercussions, asserting that this issue cannot be overlooked by Congressional Republicans.
Close associates noted that Cotton is a dedicated supporter of Trump, and they believe he will uphold accountability for Comey regarding these serious accusations.
