Republicans Claim Victory at Congressional Baseball Game
On Wednesday, Republican lawmakers triumphed over their Democratic counterparts in the annual Congressional Baseball Game held in Washington, D.C. The final score was a decisive 11-2, marking the sixth consecutive win for Republicans in this matchup.
A standout moment from the game occurred in the bottom of the third inning when Senator Eric Schmidt made an impressive diving catch near the left field line, preventing Rep. Johnny Olszewski (D-Md.) from getting an extra-base hit with the bases loaded and no outs. Interestingly, this spectacular play resulted in a nosebleed for Schmidt.
Senator Schmidt, who represents Missouri, also had a notable performance at bat, ending the game with two hits and two walks. Following the game, he expressed on X, “I left everything on the field. I was honored to be chosen as MVP.”
Rep. Greg Steube (R-Fla.) took to the mound sporting President Trump’s “America 250” hat and knee-high American flag socks. He pitched seven innings, allowing just two runs while striking out five Democratic players.
Steube joyfully proclaimed on social media the day after the game, “Republicans win…again! 6 consecutive wins for Congress Baseball!” He added, “There’s nothing more American than baseball. Playing during America’s 250th anniversary makes it even better!”
Throughout the game, defensive lapses hindered the Democrats’ efforts. For instance, Rep. Pete Aguilar (D-Calif.) managed to stop a grounder in the second inning, but his throw sailed over second base into right field, allowing two runs to score for Republicans. Additionally, Democratic starting pitcher Rep. Chris Delzio (D-Pennsylvania) had a tough third inning, giving up 10 runs and walking seven players.
The game drew more than 32,000 attendees and successfully raised over $3.1 million for charities in the Washington, D.C., area. Overall, Republicans maintain an edge in this series, with 48 wins compared to the Democrats’ 42 losses.
