Sen. Bill Hagerty Calls for Impeachment of Judge Boasberg

Senator Bill Hagerty from Tennessee has urged the U.S. House of Representatives to initiate impeachment proceedings against U.S. District Judge James Boasberg. He claims that Boasberg colluded with former President Joe Biden’s campaign to spy on the phone records of not just himself but also his colleagues and President Trump’s staff.

This year, Republican scrutiny of judges appointed during the Obama administration has intensified. These judges have consistently challenged the Trump administration’s policies. For instance, they have blocked the deportation of illegal immigrants linked to organized crime and threatened officials held in contempt for not deporting those already in El Salvador. Chief Justice John Roberts has expressed concern that this could lead to a constitutional crisis.

Adding to the controversy, Boasberg has played a significant role in various legal proceedings. He presided over the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) tribunal and was involved in the investigation related to alleged Russia-Trump collusion. Despite acknowledging that “the frequency and severity” of errors in the Russia investigation raised questions about the reliability of information from the FBI, he authorized an extension of surveillance powers for U.S. intelligence agencies in late 2020.

More recently, reports have surfaced regarding Boasberg’s involvement in Special Counsel Jack Smith’s investigation into President Trump and other Republican members of Congress, including the monitoring of their phone records. This has drawn criticism from Republican senators who feel that Boasberg has overstepped his authority. They are pushing for further investigation and the possibility of impeachment.

Hagerty reiterated these allegations in a recent post, accusing Boasberg of colluding with Biden’s “attack dogs” to undermine top Republican leaders. He stated, “Today, I call on the House of Representatives to begin impeachment proceedings against Judge Boasberg, who has clearly left the judiciary and conspired with the Biden campaign’s attack dogs to spy on the phone records of me, my colleagues, President Trump’s staff, and President Trump himself.”

He emphasized the need for accountability, asserting that such legal misconduct should not go unaddressed and should have serious repercussions.

This call for impeachment aligns with support from other legislators, including Senator Ted Cruz and Senator Eric Schmidt, who have voiced similar sentiments. Cruz specifically stated he is also demanding Boasberg’s impeachment, arguing that the judge has become part of a partisan attack against a significant number of Republicans in the Senate. Schmidt claimed Boasberg “absolutely deserves an impeachment proceeding,” emphasizing the necessity for accountability in this situation.
