Ohio Republican Sen. J.D. Vance on Sunday tore through the “ridiculous” E. Jean Carroll lawsuit against former President Donald Trump, calling it an “unfair verdict” against sexual assault victims.
Mr. Vance appeared on ABC’s “This Week” to discuss the recent ruling in E. Jean Carroll’s defamation lawsuit against Mr. Trump.jury Award On January 26, the former Elle Magazine reporter sought damages totaling $83.3 million after Carroll claimed that President Trump made defamatory comments about her in 2019.
ABC host George Stephanopoulos asked Vance if his support for Trump “sanctioned” sexual assault, but the senator pushed back and the ruling He said it was “hugely unfair” to victims of sexual assault. Vance argued that most Americans “recognize” that a lawsuit against Trump is not something they “want to fight” in the 2024 election. “Well, I think it’s actually very unfair to victims of sexual assault to say that their lives are somehow made worse by electing Donald Trump as president. “I think that’s insulting because I think what he’s trying to do is restore prosperity to victims of sexual assault,” Vance said.
“I think most Americans realize that this is not what we want to fight for in the 2024 election. Let’s fight on the issues, prosperity for American workers, and peace for the entire world.” Let’s fight over how we re-deliver the candidates. Frankly, not over the ridiculous court cases they’ve been suing for since long before Trump became a politician.”
The ABC host quickly interjected, questioning Vance’s use of terminology and highlighting how Vance called the incident “ridiculous.” Mr. Vance said that jurors in New York “It’s a far-left jurisdiction,” he said, noting that Americans don’t want to talk about New York City’s “weird jury.” Mr. Stephanopoulos again objected, questioning whether Mr. Vance believed the New York City jury was legitimate. The senator emphasized where the jurors’ donations came from and continued that their contributions should be questioned. “You call it a ‘ridiculous’ case. These juries found him liable for sexual assault and defamation. Is that crazy?” Mr. Stephanopoulos asked.
“George, these are juries from far-left jurisdictions. Too often these lawsuits are funded by left-wing donors, and the lawsuits are not aimed at seeking justice for a particular group of individuals, but at a clear is being funded to hurt him politically,” Vance said.
“There are so many crises going on around the world. There are so many problems here at home. I think Donald Trump is the best person to solve these problems and to convince the American people. I think it’s very possible that they can. What they don’t want to talk about is this weird jury in New York City. They’re trying to figure out how to make their lives better, how to make the world a more peaceful place. We want to talk about how to lead,” Vance said.
“So if a New York City jury finds someone responsible for sexual defamation or sexual assault, does that mean that jury is not legitimate?” Stephanopoulos pushed back.
“Well, if the case is funded by left-wing donors and the whole case contains an absolute left-wing bias, George, I absolutely need to question that particular conclusion. “Of course, we have to remember that these cases exist not because they were trying to pursue justice,” Vance said.
“Far-left donor Reid Hoffman did not fund this lawsuit because he cares about what happens to sexual assault victims. They funded this lawsuit. It’s pretty weird, it’s weird to use the courts in this way. Something like this has never happened in American history and to go after Donald Trump. I think we should question the whole organization that’s being used.”
LinkedIn Co-Founder Reid Hoffman especially has been a significant donor to Democratic causes and efforts, particularly those opposed to Trump. He financed multiple lawsuits against the former president against Carroll.
