Senate Republicans Seek to Tighten Visa Regulations

In response to the recent tragic events in Boulder, Colorado, Senate Republicans are advocating for stricter regulations regarding visa overstays. Senator Jim Banks from Indiana plans to introduce legislation that redefines overstaying a visa as “illegal entry.”

This initiative follows the attack involving an Egyptian national named Mohamed Sabri Soliman, whose visa had expired in March. Banks’ bill references both Soliman and the September 11 hijackers as examples of individuals who overstayed their visas.

Banks articulated in a statement, “The Boulder terrorists and 9/11 hijackers weren’t sneaking in; they were exploiting their visas. This is equally serious and dangerous. My proposed bill aims to address this problem and prevent future threats.”

Soliman arrived in the U.S. two years ago on a work visa. The incident has raised concerns about the existing immigration policies under the Biden administration, particularly about individuals overstaying their visas. The Department of Homeland Security has reported over 565,000 people are currently in that situation.

Banks’ proposed legislation proposes various penalties. It aims to make visa overstays a misdemeanor criminal offense, leading to a maximum of six months imprisonment for first-time offenders, escalating to two years for repeat offenses. Civil fines would also increase, starting at $500 for initial violations.

Soliman reportedly targeted a peaceful protest, using Molotov cocktails and injuring eight individuals, including a Holocaust survivor. He now faces serious federal charges, including attempted murder and hate crimes, which could result in a combined sentence of over 600 years.
