Sen. Josh Hawley Questions MLB About 'Trend of Discrimination' Toward Christian Players

Senator Josh Hawley (R-Missouri) recently reached out to Major League Baseball (MLB) Commissioner Rob Manfred, addressing what he described as a pattern of discrimination against players who openly express their Christian beliefs.

His concerns were heightened after some pitchers from the San Francisco Giants received warnings for displaying Bible verses on their hats during Pride Month.

According to reports, two pitchers, including starter Landen Loup, featured Bible verses alongside the rainbow Giants logo on their caps. Another player, Sam Hentges, opted for a standard cap instead.

Hawley mentioned in his message to Manfred that an undercover investigation had uncovered discriminatory practices against an MLB player due to his Catholic faith.

He insisted, “We must address what seems to be a consistent pattern of discrimination within MLB against players who hold Christian beliefs.”

Hawley criticized the league’s defense that it merely prohibits writing on uniforms, pointing out inconsistencies in their history. He recalled how, back in 2020, MLB readily allowed uniforms and fields to display political messages like “Black Lives Matter” and “United for Change,” even permitting “BLM” to be stenciled on the pitcher’s mounds.

He requested a “complete copy of the uniform policy” that led to warnings against the Giants’ players and a list of other instances where players faced similar warnings or penalties over the past five seasons.

Furthermore, Hawley sought clarification on whether players are “required, encouraged, or expected” to wear Pride Knight merchandise, and whether there would be consequences for those who choose not to comply.

Hawley voiced his perspective to FOX News Digital, suggesting that MLB is utilizing its influence to “target Christians.”

He remarked, “MLB has a favorable arrangement with the federal government. They operate under different regulations compared to other companies, yet they’re using their power to undermine Christian beliefs and infringe upon free speech. This isn’t right, and MLB must change its approach immediately.”
