Senator Mark Kelly Contemplates Presidential Run in 2028

Senator Mark Kelly has indicated that he might “seriously consider” a bid for the presidency in 2028. In a recent interview with the BBC, the Democratic senator from Arizona mentioned that several individuals have encouraged him to pursue this path.

The former Navy officer gained significant attention following a controversial moment when the Department of Justice aimed to charge him and some fellow Democrats for advising service members against complying with certain orders they deemed illegal. A grand jury ultimately chose not to indict him, though he still faces potential repercussions from the Department of War related to his actions.

While contemplating a run, Kelly expressed uncertainty about whether he would be the right candidate for such a role. He emphasized that any decision would involve discussions with close family members, including his wife, Gabrielle Giffords, their daughters, and his identical twin brother, who is also an astronaut.

“You know, with my wife, Gabby, with my two daughters, and my brother, I have a twin brother who was also an astronaut. Think about for a second how this would affect him. We’re identical twins,” he explained.

“So, you know, I’ll seriously consider this, because we are in some seriously challenging times right now,” he added.

Currently, Kelly’s focus is on supporting Democratic candidates in the upcoming midterm elections before making any concrete plans regarding a presidential run.

“I have people talk to me about it all the time, but we have an election in 2026 that I’m really worried about,” Kelly noted. “We’ve got to get through that first. I will make a decision.”
