Sen. Lindsey Graham Passes Away at 71

Senator Lindsey Graham (R-South Carolina) has died at the age of 71 due to what has been described as a “brief, sudden illness,” his office announced early Sunday.

His official social media accounts shared the news shortly after 2 a.m. Sunday, indicating that he had passed away Saturday night. They requested prayers and privacy for his family during this difficult time.

Mr. Graham had a lengthy career in the United States Senate, serving for more than 20 years. He recently won his seat in the Republican primary in early June this year and was known for his close alignment with former President Donald Trump.

In 2026, he notably voted for the Protecting American Voter Eligibility Act (SAVE) and was an outspoken supporter of U.S. military action against Iran, highlighting his strong stance on various national issues.

Though Graham never married and had no children, he lost his parents at a young age. He is survived by his sister, Darling Graham Nordon, whom he raised after their parents’ passing. She shared how he became her legal guardian at just 22 while she was only 13.

In a video, Nordon expressed, “No matter what, he was always there for me.”

Kevin Bishop, Graham’s longtime communications director, confirmed the senator’s passing on social media. He reflected on their long working relationship, mentioning how much Graham will be missed and emphasized the loss for both South Carolina and the country.

Emergency responders were called to Graham’s residence in Washington, D.C., Saturday night following reports of a “cardiac arrest,” as indicated by police scanners.

Interestingly, just the day before, the senator had returned to the Capitol after meeting with Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskiy in Kiev.

As for the Senate vacancy, it is noted that the governor has the authority to appoint someone to fill the position until a special election occurs.

Graham’s death raises questions, especially amid recent concerns regarding the health of Senator Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.), who remains hospitalized after an incident last month.
