Sen. Warner Critiques Immigration Policies

Senator Mark Warner from Virginia expressed on Monday that the Biden administration has “failed” to secure the southern border while also casting criticism on the Trump administration for primarily arresting immigrants without criminal records.

During an interview on Fox News’ “Special Report,” Warner responded to a question about whether Virginia should discontinue cooperation between state law enforcement and ICE regarding the apprehension of undocumented immigrants with criminal backgrounds. He mentioned data showing that about 75% of individuals arrested by ICE in Virginia lack a criminal history, despite federal claims of targeting serious offenders under Trump’s mass deportation strategy.

“The reality is that while many may have entered the country illegally, a significant majority of those arrested have no other criminal history,” Warner stated.

When asked about collaboration with ICE for targeting individuals with criminal records, Warner acknowledged the Biden administration’s shortcomings at the border but noted that the focus on criminal records isn’t being pursued currently under Trump’s watch. He said, “We might want to work toward targeting those with criminal histories, but that’s not what’s taking place.” He recounted situations where parents were apprehended by ICE while dropping off their kids or going to work, leading to distressing outcomes, like leaving children unattended in vehicles in Minnesota.

“There should be a cooperative effort here. What I’ve observed in Minnesota indicates virtually no collaboration between local police and ICE, likely due to ICE’s current tactics,” Warner elaborated.

Warner’s comments come in the wake of protests following a shooting incident in Minneapolis, where an ICE agent fatally shot an American citizen, raising significant outrage among locals and calls for prosecution. While many have condemned the shooting, the Trump administration and Republican leaders have supported the agent’s actions as justified.

Additionally, a week later, another ICE agent shot an alleged undocumented immigrant during an attempted arrest, claiming to have felt threatened when the suspect resisted.

Regarding the protests, Warner emphasized the importance of First Amendment rights but voiced disapproval of protests that disrupt religious services. He noted that there are around 3,500 ICE agents in Minneapolis, far outnumbering the local police force of about 800, which hints at a possible imbalance in enforcement strategies.

Ultimately, Warner emphasized that local law enforcement is typically effective at addressing genuine criminals, which raises questions about the broader immigration enforcement system in place today.
