Senator Marsha Blackburn Announces Gubernatorial Run
Senator Marsha Blackburn has revealed her intention to run for governor of Tennessee.
On Wednesday, Blackburn, a Republican from Tennessee, shared a campaign video on X (formerly Twitter) where she formally announced her candidacy.
“In his first six months, President Trump has made historic progress once again to make America great, but as he sends power back to the country, he will need a powerful conservative governor who can bring that revolution home,” Blackburn stated. “I’m running to be Tennessee’s next governor and ensuring that Tennessee is a conservative leader in America.”
In her announcement on social media, she expressed her commitment, stating, “Official! I run for the governor to ensure that Tennessee is a conservative leader in America for this and the next generation. I am honored to have your support.” #TNGOV
Blackburn was re-elected to the Senate in November 2024, with her term set to conclude in 2031. Should she win the governorship, she could appoint someone to take her Senate seat temporarily until a special election occurs in 2028.
Originally elected to the Senate in 2018, Blackburn has had a lengthy political career, serving 16 years in the House before that. If successful, she would make history as both the first woman to represent Tennessee in the Senate and the first female governor of the state.
Aside from Blackburn, John Rose is currently the only other declared candidate in the Republican primary for governor.
There are whispers of other potential challengers, including Tennessee Secretary of State Tre Hargett, Tennessee House Speaker Cameron Sexton, and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth; however, it remains unclear if they meet the residency requirements by election time.
