Proposed Bill Addresses Religious Vaccination Exemptions in Schools
A new bill aimed at blocking federal tax funding to schools that refuse religious exemptions for vaccinations has been introduced by Senator Mike Lee (R-Utah). His perspective is clear: educational institutions should understand that not everyone “worships Fauci.”
The legislation, known as the Guarantee of Religious Accommodations in Early Childhood Education (GRACE) Act, has been co-sponsored by Senator Tommy Tuberville (R-AL) and brought into the House by Representative Greg Steube (R-FL). It has garnered support from over 50 organizations, including groups like Children’s Health Defense, Moms for Liberty, and Autism Action Network.
This bill proposes to not only withhold funding from schools that deny religious vaccine exemptions but also to prohibit these institutions from requiring students and parents to provide documentation for such exemptions. It’s a significant stance, especially considering the context of recent changes in states like California and New York, which have eliminated similar religious exemptions, impacting many families who now can’t access taxpayer-funded schools.
Lee emphasized the issue, stating, “Schools are discriminating against religious children and targeting their families over vaccine exemptions.” He argued that denying kindergarteners access to school because of vaccination status, particularly when influenced by religious beliefs, is both cruel and unconstitutional.
He continued, “The GRACE Act would prevent federal tax dollars from going to schools that refuse religious vaccine exemptions and would make it illegal to target families for expressing their faith. Institutions must understand that we don’t all follow Mr. Fauci.”
Dr. Anthony Fauci, the former director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, has made controversial remarks, asserting that the government should “use the lockdown to get people vaccinated.”
Supporting this bill, Tuberville remarked, “This is a free country, and parents should have the freedom to decide which vaccines their children receive.” He underscored that parents, not the federal government, know what’s best for their children’s medical choices, especially concerning religious exemptions.
Steube echoed these sentiments, mentioning that “freedom of speech and religion are among the most sacred rights guaranteed by the Constitution.”
Lee has been a consistent advocate for medical freedom, previously opposing the Biden administration’s policies related to the pandemic response. He has also partnered with Senator Rand Paul (R-KY) to eliminate laws that protect pharmaceutical companies from accountability in cases where individuals are harmed by their products.
