Sen. Rick Scott Weighs In on Housing Affordability Crisis

Florida Republican Senator Rick Scott has expressed agreement with New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani regarding the troubling rise in housing costs, although he disagrees with the mayor’s proposed solutions.

During his “Rescuing America” video series on Tuesday, Scott highlighted the ongoing homeownership crisis. While he acknowledged Mamdani’s concerns about housing affordability, he was critical of the mayor’s approach.

“Housing is completely unaffordable. But, his [Mamdani’s] socialist policies are not the answer. Socialism never is,” Scott stated.

He posited that the afflictions of the housing market don’t signify a failure of capitalism but are more indicative of how government interventions and regulations have exacerbated the issue, leading to inflated housing prices.

“The U.S. housing market has reached its lowest affordability level in history. The government has inserted themselves so far into the housing market that even a starter home is nearly impossible to afford,” he explained.

Scott credited former President Trump for attempting to ease regulations but emphasized that Congress also needs to take responsibility. He singled out rising federal spending as a critical factor, arguing that it’s increasing financial strain on many Americans.

Recently, Congress acted on housing affordability with the bipartisan 21st Century ROAD to Housing Act, which was signed into law in July after clearing both legislative chambers.

This new law includes provisions that restrict certain large investors from acquiring single-family homes and aims to promote housing supply while lowering regulatory hurdles.

Mortgage rates pose yet another challenge for potential buyers. As of September 17, the average 30-year fixed-rate mortgage had climbed to 6.95%, up from 6.76% the week prior, according to Freddie Mac.

Reflecting on his time as Florida’s governor, Scott highlighted policies that his administration executed to bolster home construction and better manage supply and demand.

He urged Congress to reduce regulations, arguing that such moves would allow Americans to maximize their earnings.

Scott’s “Rescuing America” initiative outlines a vision built on three core principles: balancing the federal budget, reducing regulations, and fostering job creation.

“@NYCMayor Zohran Mamdani is right to say housing is unaffordable, but socialism is NEVER THE ANSWER! @POTUS has been working to get big government out of the way and cut regulations, but Congress must DO ITS JOB too,” Scott shared on social media.
