Sen. Rick Scott Introduces Legislation on Internet-Connected Devices
Senator Rick Scott from Florida has introduced a new bill that instructs the Department of Commerce to evaluate the national security risks associated with high-wattage internet-connected devices and applications operated by foreign adversaries, particularly the Chinese Communist Party.
On Friday, Scott announced the bill’s objective: to explore potential weaknesses in U.S. electrical grids that could arise from specific internet-connected appliances tied to foreign threats, making it part of the “Protect the Grid” initiative aimed at limiting remote operations.
The legislation mandates that the Commerce Department, in coordination with other federal agencies, prepare a report for Congress within 270 days. This report will analyze the risks posed by high-wattage Internet of Things (IoT) devices and similar applications managed by foreign entities. Examples of these devices include smart ovens, laundry machines, electric vehicle chargers, water heaters, and air conditioners, particularly those using over 500 watts of power.
According to the bill, applications from companies under foreign control could significantly manipulate the influence of these adversaries and create instability in the U.S. electrical grid. The legislation references studies from institutions like Princeton University, Georgia Tech, and the University of California, Santa Cruz, which warn about “madiot” attacks that exploit IoT devices to trigger power outages or damage the grid.
This measure also reinforces Executive Order 13873, which was signed in 2019, allowing the Secretary of Commerce to limit or ban technology and services from foreign companies considered a national security threat.
In his statement, Scott expressed that the bill aims to “secure our grid” and prevent foreign powers from putting American citizens at risk through their own appliances.
The bill has garnered support from a coalition focused on American prosperity. President John Tohmy remarked that it is a “significant step” in ensuring Americans are aware of who controls the technology in their homes and who has access to their data.
The Protect the Grid Act is part of Scott’s broader legislative initiatives aimed at addressing China’s influence and countering foreign hostile activities, including issues related to intelligence gathering, market exploitation, and technology security.
