Sen. Tim Scott Discusses Support for Trump as a Devout Christian

Senator Tim Scott from South Carolina appeared on CBS Mornings Plus on Tuesday to talk about his newly released book, “One Nation Always Forward: Profiles in Christian Courage.” During the interview, he was questioned about his Christian beliefs and how they align with his support for President Donald Trump.

Scott was asked specifically about the perceived threats to American Jewish and Christian values and how society can arrive at a shared “truth” when opinions on issues like illegal immigration vary. CBS anchor Adriana Diaz probed deeper, asking, “As a practical Christian, how do you reconcile your support for President Trump when many view his actions as lacking Christian values?”

Scott responded dismissively to criticisms of Trump. He characterized them as typical political rhetoric. “I’ve heard a lot of politicians say a lot about other politicians,” he noted, defending Trump’s record, particularly on tax cuts, which he believes reflect American values of opportunity and personal responsibility.

“It’s important to stay grounded,” he stated. He pointed out Trump’s efforts in enhancing funding for initiatives such as Pepfar, aimed at combatting AIDS in Africa, and contrasted these with criticisms of Trump’s tax cuts.

He argued, for example, that the impact of tax cuts was significant for average American families and criticized the current administration’s policies as detrimental to economic power for individuals.

Scott concluded that a return to optimism and personal responsibility is key for the future of the country. He also expressed his views on the New York City mayoral race, criticizing Democratic candidate Zoran Mamdani as the “worst” option for the city.
