The U.S. Senate has confirmed Marco Rubio as President Donald Trump's secretary of state, making him the first cabinet nominee confirmed by the new administration.

The vote came a week after Rubio appeared before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, where he previously served as ranking member. Sen. Jim Risch (R-Idaho) said Mr. Rubio gave a “perfect” performance on the committee. During the hearing, Rubio zeroed in on China, calling the administration “the most powerful and dangerous quasi-peer adversary this country has ever faced,” and threatening the United States with further China's global influence. He called for a strong response.
