Senate Democrat: Patel was testifying specifically for President Trump

Senator Chris Coons Critiques Patel’s Testimony

During a heated oversight hearing on Tuesday, Senator Chris Coons (D-Del.) chose to refrain from commenting extensively, instead labeling Patel’s testimony as a mere “performance.”

“It was a performance aimed primarily at one individual: President Trump,” Coons stated during an interview on CNN’s “AC360.” He recalled a prior exchange during Patel’s confirmation hearing where he asked who the FBI director served, to which Patel replied, “Not the constitution, not the American people, the White House.” According to Coons, this illustrates how Patel operates as the FBI director.

Patel found himself in confrontations with several Democratic senators, including a notable clash with Sen. Adam Schiff (D-Calif), who accused him of being “a political clown at best.”

“He’s more focused on revenge and retaliation against President Trump and anyone linked to the January 6 investigation, while simultaneously supporting Trump’s budget proposals, which included cutting $500 million from the FBI’s operational budget,” Coons remarked.

He mentioned that Patel was under scrutiny for the investigation into the recent shooting of conservative activist Charlie Kirk and the FBI’s involvement regarding matters tied to Jeffrey Epstein’s financial dealings. Yet, Coons expressed uncertainty about whether the hearing truly served to advance national security for Americans.

Coons’s sentiments echoed those of other Democrats, like Senator Cory Booker (D-N.J.).

“I believe some concerns arise from how the investigations into Charlie Kirk were managed, but it’s tough to predict who will remain and for how long within the Trump Cabinet,” he said.

The senator added, “He thrives on creating divisions and often takes advice from outside the realm of professional law enforcement.” Later, Coons humorously noted that Laura Rumer, a conservative activist and prominent ally of Trump, could be described as “someone I despise who has come to Kash Patel.”
