Senate Democrat: Trump attacking media ‘because he is trying to steal from you’

Sen. Chris Murphy (D-Conn.) said President-elect Trump is attacking the media because he is trying to “steal” from the American people.

Murphy appeared on MNSNBC's “Deadline: The White House” on Wednesday and detailed a lengthy X-thread post about President Trump's destruction of democracy ahead of his inauguration.

“I think it's very important to explain to people why Donald Trump is participating in this relentless campaign to silence journalists and media companies and his political opponents. Because he’s trying to steal from you,” Murphy said. Highlighted by Mediaite.

“He and his friends are in charge of the government because they want to rig the rules to make the government even richer. They want to be millionaires,” Murphy added.

Even before the incoming Trump administration takes office, pressure from billionaires like Elon Musk is already seeping into Congress. Mr. Musk, who was named co-head of President Trump's Office of Government Efficiency on Wednesday, led an aggressive campaign against a government spending bill aimed at averting a government shutdown.

The Hill has reached out to Trump's transition team for comment.

President Trump and ABC News recently settled a $15 million defamation lawsuit, and the president-elect filed suit against the Des Moines Register and its prominent pollster Ann Selzer.

“He wants to steal from ordinary Americans in order to make himself and his friends at Mar-a-Lago even richer. And he wants to silence his critics and silence the media. “The reason is that he doesn't want anyone to notice the kleptocracy he's building,” Murphy said.

Murphy pointed out that the average American doesn't care at all whether ABC News and Trump settle their lawsuits. Murphy said they're concerned about their Social Security benefits being cut because of Musk.

“That's the story we have to get out there,” he said.
