Senate Democrats call for a full disclosure of Trump's ballroom contributors

Democrats Request Transparency on White House Ballroom Funding

A coalition of Senate Democrats, spearheaded by Sen. Adam Schiff (D-Calif.), reached out to White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles on Tuesday. They requested a comprehensive overview of financial contributions for the White House ballroom construction project, including underlying terms associated with these contributions.

The senators conveyed their serious concerns regarding the funding of this new ballroom initiative, implying that private donations from entities with interests affected by the administration could pose a conflict. They pointed out that the project’s funding is projected to surpass $300 million, emphasizing that knowing who the donors are raises significant issues related to potential influence and corruption.

“Congress and the American populace deserve clarity on these matters to evaluate any conflicts of interest or ethical breaches,” they stated in the letter.

The signatories included Sens. Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.), Chris Van Hollen (D-Md.), Angela Alsobrooks (D-Md.), Alex Padilla (D-Calif.), Jon Ossoff (D-Ga.), Jeff Merkley (D-Ore.), Peter Welch (D-Vt.), Tammy Duckworth (D-Ill.), and Bernie Sanders. The letter also included support from Vermont Governor Jack Reed (D-R.I.) and Dick Durbin (D-Ill.).

The lawmakers noted that the details surrounding donations to the National Mall Trust, which is funding the ballroom project, remain unclear. They raised alarms about the potential for President Trump to be granting access to the presidency in exchange for these contributions, which may involve foreign nationals and business associates.

Concerns were also raised about the listed donors, many of whom frequently engage in business with the federal government. Some of these corporate donors have secured federal contracts worth significant sums.

“Such circumstances could lead to outright corruption as these companies and their stakeholders attempt to gain advantages from government relationships,” they cautioned.

Among the donors are notable companies like Amazon, which has entered into multi-billion-dollar contracts related to governmental cloud services, Booz Allen Hamilton with extensive contracts across several federal agencies, and defense giant Lockheed Martin.

Other contributors include Coinbase, Google, Meta, Microsoft, Palantir Technologies, and Reynolds American.

President Trump has announced plans to demolish the historic east wing of the White House to construct a 90,000-square-foot ballroom capable of hosting up to 999 guests for various events. He has assured the public that this project will not burden taxpayers as it is financed through private means.

Democrats pointed out that a substantial portion of the funding appears to originate from a $24.5 million settlement involving Google’s parent company, Alphabet Inc., and President Trump.

“These financial transactions suggest that the government may be leveraging influence over corporate settlements in return for favorable regulations,” they mentioned.

The senators are insisting that Wiles provide a complete list of all individual and corporate donors, along with a thorough explanation of the terms tied to their contributions. They additionally seek information on any donors with financial ties to current federal contracts or pending bids for new ones.

Furthermore, they’re requesting all records and communications between President Trump or any executive officials and the donors, particularly those referencing the ballroom project.

They’ve specifically inquired whether President Trump or any officials from the executive branch have consulted with the Office of Government Ethics or White House ethics officials regarding the legality of soliciting private funding for the ballroom.

The deadline for the White House to respond is set for November 5th.
