Senate Democrats change their stance on Israel as arms sales vote shows division

Shifting Perspectives Among Senate Democrats on Israel

Recently, Senate Democrats have displayed a notable change in their stance on Israel, particularly highlighted by votes aimed at halting arms sales to the nation. This shift offers a glimpse into evolving attitudes within the Senate.

More Democrats in the chamber voted with Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont, who led efforts to stop the sale of $675 million worth of munitions and guidance kits, as well as automatic rifles destined for Israel.

Although Sanders’ initiative ultimately did not pass, it’s significant that more than half of Senate Democrats supported it, with many doing so for the first time. In contrast, all Senate Republicans voted against the measure.

“The trend is changing,” remarked Sanders, who collaborates with Democrats regularly. “Americans are growing weary of funding initiatives that lead to suffering for children in Gaza. Democrats are moving forward regarding this issue and expect to engage Republicans about it in the future.” However, gaining Republican support for future efforts remains uncertain, as Sanders hoped it would.

Jim Riche, the Republican chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, responded to Sanders’ proposal by emphasizing a commitment to Israel. “His resolution would undo the Biden administration’s policies and endanger America’s closest allies in the Middle East. Returning to past policies is not an option we can afford,” he stated.

Underlying these changes within the Democratic Caucus is the emotional impact of images showing hungry children in Gaza, triggering responses from both lawmakers and former President Donald Trump. While many Democrats hold Israel accountable, asserting that it restricts aid to civilians, Republicans counter that the terrorist group Hamas is responsible for hoarding food supplies.

Senator Angus King of Maine, typically aligned with Senate Democrats, expressed concern over Israel’s role in the humanitarian situation. He stated, “Israel has the capacity to address these issues. I could no longer remain silent amid such dire malnutrition reports and photographs.”

Additionally, Senator Jeanne Shaheen, a leading Democrat on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, voted for an arms sale block, driven by worries that food aid could be obstructed, impacting Palestinians. “It’s vital to communicate to Prime Minister Netanyahu that changes are necessary,” Shaheen said in an interview.

On the other hand, Republican senators have largely avoided blaming Israeli leadership, attributing the lack of food aid to Hamas. Senator John Kennedy noted that Israel aims to ensure that food reaches those truly in need, rather than being appropriated by Hamas.

Nevertheless, not all Senate Democrats see eye to eye regarding Israel. Senator John Fetterman of Pennsylvania expressed frustration, perceiving a shift in the party’s rhetoric toward condemnation of Israel. “I fundamentally believe we’re witnessing a significant change even within my party,” he shared. “What’s happening in Gaza is tragic, yet I denounce both Hamas and Iran for their roles in this crisis,” he added, expressing confusion about the collective sentiment against Israel.
