Senate Democrats Consider Halting DHS Funding Following Border Patrol Shooting

Senate Democrats are threatening to oppose funding for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) following a recent shooting incident involving Border Patrol agents.

Democratic senators such as Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.), Mark Warner (D-Va.), Martin Heinrich (D-N.M.), and Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) have expressed their disapproval of a funding bill for DHS, asserting the need for significant reforms within the agency.

This position stems from a mass shooting that resulted in the death of a 37-year-old man.

Democrats made their stance clear shortly after “House Democrats collaborated with many Republicans to pass a substantial $64.4 billion funding bill, which includes nearly $10 billion for ICE.”

Just days prior, seven House Democrats sided with almost all Republicans to advance the extensive funding bill, with Rep. Thomas Massie (R-Ky.) being the sole Republican to dissent.

The bill managed to bypass the objections of Democratic leaders who contended it fell short in curbing ICE’s actions and police conduct.

Schumer stated, “What is happening in Minnesota is horrific and cannot be tolerated in any city in America.” He noted that “Democrats have called for common-sense reforms regarding the DHS spending bill, but due to Republican opposition to President Trump, the DHS bill significantly lacks measures to prevent ICE abuses. Therefore, I will vote no.”

He also mentioned that Senate Democrats would not provide “the votes needed to proceed with a spending bill if it includes funding for DHS.”

Warner commented, “President Trump’s unchecked authority for federal immigration officials has resulted in another senseless murder. This brutal repression must come to an end.” He emphasized that he “cannot and will not vote” to fund DHS while violent federal interventions occur in U.S. cities.

Heinrich declared, “Enough is enough. I will not support funding illegal activities through DHS, whether alone or bundled with other bills. The agency requires major reform, and it’s urgent.”

Warren firmly stated, “Absolutely not. ICE doesn’t need any funding. We should not be financing this terror.”

Sen. Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) added, “I won’t endorse funding the illegal operations of DHS and ICE that instill fear in cities like Chicago and Minneapolis. The death of one innocent American and the targeting of countless others is a national disgrace.”

According to reports, DHS officials stated that agents were “carrying out a targeted operation in Minneapolis against an unauthorized immigrant suspected of violent offenses.”

The individual involved, identified as Alex Preti, allegedly approached a “U.S. Border Patrol agent with a 9mm semi-automatic handgun” during this operation.
