Senate Democrats Propose Requiring Women to Sign Up for the Draft

Senate Democrats have added a provision to the annual defense bill requiring women to register for the draft, but it has drawn Republican opposition.

This annual bill, known as the National Defense Authorization Act, authorizes the Department of Defense’s fiscal year budget, but also authorizes Department of Defense policies and programs. The House and Senate each pass their own bills and combine them into one.

This year, Democrats, who control the Senate and the committees drafting the defense bill, included a provision in the bill that would require women to register for the draft, The Hill.

Sen. Roger Wicker of Mississippi, the top Republican on the Senate Armed Services Committee, said he would try to remove the provision from the bill. “I’m hopeful that it will be removed in a full or conference session,” Wicker told The Hill.

The committee’s chairman, Sen. Jack Reed (D-RI), an Army veteran, told CNN he doesn’t understand why the issue is a “sore issue.”

“I introduced an amendment to require women to register, but it didn’t get the support of the opposition. We’re trying to get it done. It makes sense. The military right now is a mixed force,” he told CNN.

Wicker Said in 2021 When he opposed the idea:

I applaud the women who volunteer for our military and sacrifice every day for our nation’s freedom, but it is wrong to force them into military service by law. I, along with millions of other Americans, cannot support the idea that our daughters and granddaughters should be forced to fight against their will in the next military conflict.

Republican Sam Brown, who is challenging incumbent Democratic Sen. Jacky Rosen for the Nevada Senate seat, blasted Rosen for voting in favor of the provision.

“I was shocked,” Brown, an Army veteran who was wounded in Afghanistan, said in a video posted to X.

Look at my face. This is the high cost of war. I learned that Jacky Rosen voted this week to make it mandatory for daughters to register for the draft. I’ll have more to say on this.

There is no immediate prospect of a war requiring conscription, but under Biden, U.S. troops are currently engaged in conflicts in Iraq and Syria, and fighting Houthi rebels on ships in the Red Sea.

The U.S. military is also involved in supporting Israel’s war with Hamas and the Ukrainian military’s war with Russia.
