Senate GOP to stop Dem attempt to ban bump stocks after SCOTUS reverses Trump-era rule

Republicans are poised to block Democratic attempts Tuesday to force a vote in the Senate on a bump stock ban that would reinstate a federal rule recently struck down by the Supreme Court.

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer of New York said Democrats are pushing for a vote on a bill that would ban bump stocks, firearm accessories that allow a gun to be fired repeatedly.

“The Senate can help reinstate this public safety rule and we’ll be trying that next week. As Majority Leader, I have the authority to allow a unanimous yes vote. We’ll see what the MAGA Republicans do. Will they allow this rule to pass or will they cave in to MAGA and hurt the American people?” the senator said at a press conference on Sunday. CBS News.

The Supreme Court ruled 6-3 last week to strike down a federal ban on bump stocks enacted under the Trump administration, a decision that drew backlash from Democrats.

Sen. Martin Heinrich (D-Minn.) plans to seek unanimous consent to move his bill, the Ban Illegal Machine Gun Parts Act (BUMP), forward to a vote on Tuesday afternoon, but likely opposition from Republican senators will prevent him from getting the bill to a vote on the Senate floor.

“Today’s lethal ruling by a Supreme Court majority out of touch with reality relegalizes bump stocks, a ruling that will result in the deaths of innocent Americans,” the senators said in a statement after the ruling. “Bump stocks serve no legitimate purpose, and Congress must act now and pass legislation to permanently ban these deadly devices.”

“If my Republican colleagues want to do the right thing for our country, the answer is very simple: each and every one of you join us in banning bump stocks and ensuring we never again see a catastrophe like what we saw in Las Vegas, Nevada,” Schumer challenged his colleagues in a speech to the House of Representatives on Monday.

Following the Supreme Court’s decision, former President Trump’s campaign stressed that the ruling should be respected.
