Texas Senate Candidate Discusses Rival and Campaign Strategy
During a recent episode of “The View,” co-host Sunny Hostin questioned Democratic Texas Senate candidate James Talarico about his rival, Rep. Jasmine Crockett (D-Texas). She suggested the discussions around Crockett’s electoral chances might reflect broader racial biases, asking, “If she beats you in this primary, do you think she can win a statewide election?”
Crockett, earlier in the year, expressed her resolve in a meeting with her co-hosts, emphasizing that she often finds herself underestimated. Talarico responded to Hostin with a clear “Absolutely,” supporting the idea that Crockett could indeed secure a statewide victory.
Talarico, who has voiced his admiration for Crockett, stated he would fully back her if he were to win the primary. “I have deep love and respect for her,” he said, reinforcing their shared objectives of transforming Texas politics and making significant changes at the national level.
He believes his unique experiences give him an advantage in the race. Talarico pointed out that he successfully flipped a historically Republican district, demonstrating his ability to win elections in challenging environments. “What I think I bring to this primary is something unique. I have a history of winning these kinds of elections,” he remarked.
Talarico also discussed his strategy, which involves attracting a diverse voter base, particularly young voters who feel disconnected from traditional political practices. He emphasized the importance of broadening the Democratic appeal, aiming for a coalition that includes people from various political backgrounds.
Additionally, Talarico expressed his views on immigration policy, stating it was time to “dismantle” ICE and create a new framework focused more on community safety rather than enforcement.
It’s worth noting that Texas hasn’t elected a Democrat to statewide office since 1994, making the upcoming election particularly significant for the party.
