The Senate Armed Services Committee moved the nomination of defense secretary nominee Pete Hegseth to the full Senate on Monday, moving him closer to confirmation.
The vote was held behind closed doors, and officials said the vote was along party lines, with 14 Republicans voting in favor of his nomination and 13 Democrats voting against.
Committee member Sen. Jim Banks (R-Ind.) posted on X:
I just voted to advance the nomination of Pete Hegseth to the Senate seat. There's no time to waste. The Senate should confirm Hegseth now!
Sen. Tim Sheehy (R-Montana) posted on X:
Please vote to send Pete Hegseth's nomination to the Senate floor.
The Senate should move quickly to confirm Pete so we can begin the important work of supporting our warfighters and rebuilding our military.
Time to get to work!
CNN said the vote came after “intense debate” and Republicans said it was important to confirm Trump's defense nominee and voted in favor of waiving the rule requiring seven days' notice for committee votes. It was reported that he had thrown.
Committee Chairman Roger Wicker (R-Mississippi) predicted last week that Democrats would try to delay the entire Senate vote until Thursday.
CNN reported that Democrats believe this is an “effort to get votes before new allegations emerge.” There was no sign of any new allegations, and Democrats on the committee opposed his nomination from the beginning.
Last week, Democrats tried to smear and embarrass Hegseth during his confirmation hearing, but they failed to anger him.
The committee's vote came just hours after President Donald Trump was sworn into office for a second time.
Sen. Bill Cassidy (R-Louisiana) announced his support for Hegseth's nomination, securing the 50 votes needed for Hegseth's confirmation.
