The senator voted Friday to pass the law to prevent cuts in DC's local budget after city officials warned that the district was facing a $1 billion hit under a suspended government funding bill approved at the Senate moment.
The bill allowed districts to continue operating in the 2025 budget, which was adopted, and was passed by audio vote.
“The law confirms that we are looking after residents of the district. Senate minority leader Chuck Schumer (DN.Y.) said ahead of the vote.
“This law is very good news for residents of the District of Columbia. We are happy to pass this bill today.”
Schumer's office said the vote would override the 2024 government-funded law, but omitted the language that would allow DC to operate at the 2025 spending level adopted by the city last year.
The bill still needs to be passed in the House and signed into law by President Trump.
