Senate Republican encounters backlash from Democrats over remarks about Mamdani

Senator’s Controversial Post Sparks Outrage

Republican Senator Tommy Tuberville from Alabama recently posted on X, sharing a side-by-side image that contrasted a photo of the Twin Towers during the September 11, 2001 terrorist attack with a picture of New York City Mayor Zoran Mamdani. Tuberville captioned it with, “The enemy is at the gate.” This message came from an account named “End Wokeness,” and included the statement, “Less than 25 years apart.”

The image appears to show Mamdani celebrating a Ramadan Iftar event at City Hall. The source is an Instagram account known as “muslimnews,” which shared video footage that corresponds with the picture Tuberville referenced.

Mamdani, who identifies as both a Muslim and a democratic socialist, directly responded to Tuberville’s comments. He expressed, “Let there be as much outrage from politicians in Washington when children go hungry as there is when I share bread with New Yorkers.”

Democrats quickly criticized Tuberville’s remarks. Democratic Senator Ed Markey from Massachusetts described Tuberville’s comments as “racist, Islamophobic, disgusting,” claiming Republicans aim to make America a predominantly white nation again.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer added that this kind of hatred is “senseless” and emphasized that Muslim Americans contribute to society in various roles, asserting that such Islamophobic vitriol contradicts American values.

Tuberville retorted by sharing Schumer’s post and stated, “Denouncing Islamic extremism as a cult does not make you an ‘Islamophobe.’” He continued by describing the dangers posed by Islamic extremists, claiming they wish harm on non-Muslims and are incompatible with American values.

Earlier, Tuberville had also shared another post mentioning “the enemy is at the gate,” linking it to a New York Times article about Mamdani’s inauguration where he swore in using the Quran, marking a historical moment for New York City.
