Senate Republicans hold initial hearing on claims of a cover-up regarding Biden's cognitive decline

Senate Hearing on Biden’s Cognitive Decline

Senate Republicans are gearing up for a significant congressional hearing that aims to address concerns about former President Joe Biden’s mental health. This follows allegations of a cover-up regarding his cognitive decline.

Senators John Cornyn of Texas and Eric Schmitt of Missouri will co-chair the session. The hearing, scheduled for Wednesday, is set to investigate why constitutional measures to remove Biden from office were not enacted during his presidency.

Cornyn emphasized that one of the primary objectives of the hearing is to reveal “what happened behind the scenes” during pivotal moments of Biden’s administration.

The focus will also shift to testimonies from former White House officials, detailing who was really making decisions during Biden’s time in office. This is especially relevant in light of a book titled “Original Singh” by CNN host Jake Tupper and Axios reporter Alex Thompson, which was released just before the hearing was announced.

In his comments, Cornyn suggested that there has been a significant gap in Biden’s engagement with his duties, indicating that it’s unclear how long he has been less involved. The concern involves whether those taking on presidential responsibilities were legitimately authorized by the electorate.

The upcoming hearing is titled “Not Suitable for Service: How Biden Put America at Risk and Undermined the Constitution.” It will feature witnesses from the Trump administration as well as scholars who served during the Reagan and Bush presidencies.

Among those expected to testify is Theodore Waldo, a former deputy assistant attorney general, and Sean Spicer, who was the White House press secretary during Trump’s term. John Harrison, a law scholar from the University of Virginia, will also provide insights based on his experience across both administrations.

Waldo and Harrison have hinted that their testimonies will delve into Biden’s alleged reliance on an AutoPen, a device that mimics a person’s signature. They suggest that this might have contributed to avoiding the invocation of the 25th Amendment.

Biden has denied the allegations from lawmakers and Trump regarding his potential misuse of the AutoPen. Trump has even called for an investigation into whether Biden’s team used such tools to mask cognitive issues.

Spicer’s testimony is expected to compare Biden’s media relations to those of Trump, suggesting that some outlets may have overlooked signs of Biden’s decline.

Interestingly, Democrats on the committee have refrained from calling any witnesses, with Senator Dick Durbin, a leading Democrat, criticizing the hearing as a waste of time, arguing that more pressing issues should be the focus of their discussions.
