Senate returns to Washington as government shutdown approaches 36-day milestone

President Trump’s ‘Nuclear’ Demand Stalls with Senate Republicans Amid Ongoing Government Shutdown

As it stands, there hasn’t been any change in the stalemate that began when the government officially shut down on October 1. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, a Democrat from New York, alongside his party colleagues, is insisting on addressing the expiring Obamacare premium subsidies before they’re willing to consider reopening the government. This push for a resolution comes just as nationwide recruitment efforts officially launched last Saturday.

“People are going to see a significant increase in their health care costs,” Schumer noted last week, expressing concern. He said, “Folks will sit around the dinner table on Friday night feeling that unease, asking themselves, ‘How are we going to manage this?'”

After a week-long trip to Asia, President Trump has returned home but seems to be keeping a distance from the ongoing government shutdown. Despite the mounting pressure, he remains firm on not engaging in negotiations with Congress’s top Democrats until the shutdown situation is resolved.

In line with this, the President and other Republicans have made it clear that they won’t negotiate on health insurance matters until the government reopens. During an appearance on CBS’s “60 Minutes,” Trump expressed his unwillingness to cave to pressure from Democrats, whom he believes are misguided, stating, “There’s something wrong with these people.”

He later echoed this sentiment over the weekend with posts on his social media platform, Truth Social, reiterating his stance.
