Senate supporters of Trump aim to block the Venezuela military authority resolution

Allies of former President Donald Trump in the Senate might attempt to halt the War Powers Resolution even before it gets considered, according to reports. There’s a bipartisan push to discuss a resolution aimed at blocking military actions in Venezuela, which some senators have already voted to debate next week.

Interestingly, while some Republican senators supported starting this discussion last week, there seems to be a desire among certain GOP members to avoid a vote on the resolution altogether. Their reasoning is somewhat straightforward: since there are no U.S. troops in Venezuela, the resolution doesn’t technically apply.

Vice President J.D. Vance might be called on to resolve any stalemate if the situation becomes tied. If the Trump administration backs a motion to dismiss the bill, Vance’s tie-breaking vote could lead to its rejection. The Senate has made progress toward bringing the War Powers Resolution to a vote, although it still has to officially join the resolution.

There’s an expectation that, after addressing the resolution, the Senate could take ten hours before casting their votes, or they might opt to table the matter entirely. The path ahead is uncertain, underscoring the complexities of bipartisan negotiations amid dissenting views on foreign policy.
