South Carolina Senate Debate Highlights Tensions
During a debate on Sunday night, Sen. Darline Graham, a Republican from South Carolina, engaged in a tense exchange with her Democratic opponent, Annie Andrews, along with Libertarian candidate Kasie Whitener.
Graham expressed grave concerns about what she terms “socialist Democrats.” She referenced the horrific attacks from Hamas against Israelis on October 7, 2023, alleging that Democrats in New York celebrated the deaths of over a thousand individuals.
“Annie Andrews will not stand up to the socialist Democratic Party. She’s only going to join them,” Graham claimed firmly.
Andrews responded, insisting she is prepared to challenge her own party. “I told you my opponent was going to call me a socialist, and there she’s done it again. She’s been told to come out here and call me Bernie, Ocasio, Mamdani. That’s what’s in her script,” Andrews remarked, mentioning notable figures like Sen. Bernie Sanders and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.
She went on to assert, “But the truth is my name is Annie Andrews. There shouldn’t be any confusion about that because, unlike my opponent, I haven’t changed my name recently.”
Andrews continued to draw contrasts between herself and Graham, stating, “The real difference between me and Sen. Graham is that I will stand up to my own party and I will always put South Carolina first. She seems to believe her job is to be the White House’s ambassador to South Carolina. The job is to represent South Carolina. She appears to read their scripts and do their bidding. We can do better.”
In retaliation, Graham emphasized her roots, stating, “My legal name is Graham and has always been Graham.” She added a personal touch, explaining, “I lost my parents when I was a little girl, and I kept the name Graham because it keeps me connected to them. So every document I have ever signed has Graham on it.”
Graham was appointed to complete her late brother Senators Lindsey Graham’s term by South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster.
Donald Trump has also expressed his support for Sen. Darline Graham as she seeks a full six-year term in the Senate.
