Senator John Fetterman Criticizes ‘Excessive Socialism’ in His Own Party

Fetterman Comments on Shift Within Democratic Party

Pennsylvania Senator John Fetterman has recently stepped back from discussing the leftist elements influencing his party.

Initially, Fetterman had voiced concerns about the increasing presence of socialism within the Democratic Party. In a statement to the New York Post, he acknowledged, “I said several months ago that the Democratic Party was becoming a socialist orgy. Recent elections validate my explanation.” His remarks came after candidates aligned with the Democratic Socialists of America achieved significant victories in three New York House primaries.

The recent elections notably reshaped the party’s delegation in New York. For example, former City Auditor Brad Lander defeated Rep. Dan Goldman in the 10th District, while doctoral student Dalializa Avila Chevalier managed to oust Rep. Adriano Espaillat in the 13th District. Furthermore, State Rep. Claire Valdez won the open seat in the 7th District. Support from the DSA suggests bright prospects for winning in November, given the current standing of these constituencies.

Fetterman was particularly critical of Avila Chevalier, stating, “She wants to abolish borders, she wants to abolish prisons. She’s a very disturbing person,” to the New York Post.

In addition to his criticism of party members, Fetterman took a jab at Maine Senate candidate Graham Platner, dubbing them “the new power couple of the corrupt left.” He has challenged Platner to release messages associated with their Kik account under the username “phustle.” Allegedly, Platner has vowed to discard his signature hoodie if he is proven guilty in this dispute.

Switching parties remains a possibility for Fetterman. He mentioned to the New York Post that even if he did change parties, his beliefs would remain unchanged, referring back to an earlier column where he described himself as an independent voice.

His standing in the community appears shaky. A recent poll conducted by the Philadelphia Inquirer and Suffolk University revealed that Fetterman has a favorability rating of only 24%, compared to a 43% unfavorable rating, which is significantly lower than Democratic Governor Josh Shapiro’s 62% approval.

The pressure on him may continue to mount, as Chris Love, a self-identified democratic socialist who won the Philadelphia House primary this spring, could emerge as a potential challenger in 2028.
