Senator Tillis criticizes Hegseth: Compares 'Kristi Noem to a five-star recruit'

Senator Tillis Critiques Army Secretary Hegseth’s Advice on Iran

In a recent interview, Republican Senator Thom Tillis expressed sharp criticism of Army Secretary Pete Hegseth for his guidance to President Trump regarding Iran. He stated that Hegseth’s advice has not only been poor but has made former cabinet member Kristi Noem seem like a standout candidate in comparison.

Tillis, who previously served North Carolina and is part of the Senate Veterans Affairs Committee, accused Hegseth of overstating U.S. military achievements against Iran early in the conflict. He also pointed to Hegseth’s decision to cancel troop deployment to Poland, a move that President Trump later reversed.

“We had informed the president that we could effectively eliminate Iran and dictate conditions, but look where we are now,” Tillis commented during his appearance on CNN’s “State of the Union.”

He added, “Seeing Hegseth pull operations in Poland while there are atrocities happening in Ukraine—well, it’s hard not to think that Kristi Noem is starting to look more competent.” This remark was directed at Noem, who faced significant backlash after personal details about her husband’s interests were revealed.

Hegseth had previously been a strong advocate for Operation Epic Fury against Iran. Despite claims of successes in diminishing Iran’s missile capabilities, the situation has escalated. Iran continues to disrupt the Strait of Hormuz, a critical passage for global oil shipments, by deploying mines and drone strikes, which has led the U.S. to respond with blockades on Iranian ports.

As the conflict persists, concerns have arisen among lawmakers regarding the readiness of U.S. military stockpiles, including key munitions like Patriot interceptors and Tomahawk missiles.

Tillis expressed frustration over what he described as shifting narratives, stating, “Just weeks ago, we were told by Hegseth that it was just a matter of time before we would dismantle Iran’s defenses. Now we’re discussing the acceptance of nuclear materials from Iran? What are we saying here?”

He labeled the proposed framework negotiations with Iran as “dubious,” underscoring his skepticism.

Earlier this month, Hegseth had paused the deployment of 4,000 troops to Poland as part of a decrease in U.S. military presence in Europe, but Trump later ordered 5,000 troops to be sent instead, with some in the administration characterizing the initial plan as sluggish.

Tillis, who opted out of running for another term last year, had consistently criticized Noem until her dismissal by Trump in March. Interestingly, he had voted to confirm both her and Hegseth in the past.

Known for not holding back his opinions of the former president, Tillis has also been vocal about issues ranging from the evaluation of former Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell to various military strategies.
