Sen. Tina Smith Endorses Abdul El-Sayed for Michigan Senate Primary

Senator Tina Smith from Minnesota recently expressed her support for Abdul El-Sayed, a Democratic candidate in the Michigan Senate primary, referring to him as a “warrior.” El-Sayed took a moment on Thursday to thank the senators backing him.

In a statement, he mentioned, “Senator Tina Smith was a warrior for working people in the United States Senate.” He highlighted her contributions to creating an economy that benefits everyone and noted his intention to follow her lead on issues concerning women’s health and reproductive rights. El-Sayed shared his deep appreciation for her support, emphasizing the future he envisions for his daughters and all Americans.

Several high-profile Democrats, including Senators Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren, along with Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, have also endorsed El-Sayed.

At a recent event, Sanders addressed the election, saying, “With all due respect to Haley Stevens, we all know this is not an election between her and Mr. Abdul. This is an election between Mr. Abdul and the billionaire class. That’s what this election is about.” El-Sayed is preparing to face U.S. Representative Haley Stevens in the Democratic primary on August 4.

Senator Gary Peters announced last year that he won’t be seeking re-election but has thrown his support behind Stevens as her potential successor in the Senate. He described Stevens as a dedicated partner during his 18 years in service, stating, “Haley Stevens will be ready to fight for Michigan from day one, which is why I am thrilled to announce that I am rooting for her with all my heart.” Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is also backing Stevens in this race.

Former Representative Mike Rogers, who is supported by President Donald Trump, faces no competition in the Republican Senate primary in Michigan.
