Senators call for stronger ethics enforcement at Federal Reserve

Rick Scott (R-Fla.) and Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) urged the Federal Reserve Chair to strike “inappropriate” trade violations. Friday letterwhich they described as a “culture of corruption” and raised concerns about what they called for ethical policy reform.

The duo inappropriately responded to a 2024 report outlined inappropriate trading, investment and disclosure activities by Atlanta Federal Reserve President Jerome Powell condemned.

“You were too late to let this culture of corruption thrive and to introduce rules to deal with it. When you established these rules, they were insufficient. And now, It appears you are refusing to force them,” Scott and Warner wrote to Powell.

According to Warren and Scott, Bostic violated federal rules more than 100 times, destroying evidence related to transactions made between 2017 and 2022. The duo said the Federal Reserve Inspector (IG) had notified Powell of the issue, but the chairman did not address it. .

“Dr. Bostic is the latest in a series of Fed officials currently involved in the Fed trading scandal four years ago,” writes Warren and Scott. “IG introduced you and other board members to the issue five months ago, but there was no official indication that you held Dr. Bostic for his illegal transaction. .”

“These obstacles represent the smudges of the Fed's records as chairs and undermine the integrity and effectiveness of the Federal Reserve,” they added.

Not only did the bipartisan lawmakers urge Powell to adopt stronger ethical policies accordingly, but also made Bosstack's case without providing recommendations for the supervisor to hold him “responsible.” After closing, we called for an independent IG.

“Why is it a failure by IG that could not fully hold Bostic Dr. Bostic's accountability?
The Fed needs an independent IG,” Warren and Scott wrote, referring to the bill that required the president to appoint an IG and introduced what would be confirmed by the Senate.

This call for IG independence came shortly after President Trump ran through 12 IGs last month, prompting bipartisan concerns about independent surveillance of federal agencies.

Scott and Warren have previously expressed concern about Powell's leadership.

A Florida Republican wrote recently Fox News Op-Ed He blames Powell for fluctuations in interest rates and poor job markets.

“In collaboration with former President Biden, Chairman Powell is leading the Federal Reserve, which failed to act independently in the best interests of Americans, instead of Washington's elite, Wall Street and left-leaning. I chose policies to appease international organizations,” wrote and proposed a complete overhaul of the Fed's board.

In December, Warren questioned Powell along with Rep. Maxine Waters (D-Calif). concerns about the possibility that the Fed might support a stress testing framework under the new proposal.

Powell was originally appointed by Trump in his first term and reappointed by former President Biden. Trump said he would allow Powell to finish his term despite voice criticism of the Fed chairman.
