Senators need to deny Billy Long’s nomination to head the IRS

Most politicians don’t typically rush to assist with paying off debts from losing campaigns, yet that’s the situation with former Rep. Billy Long (R-Mo.), who was tapped by President Trump to head the IRS.

What’s particularly concerning is that Long’s significant debt stems from a loan he took out for his unsuccessful 2022 Senate bid. Essentially, donors linked to companies accused of promoting fraudulent tax credits contributed over $130,000, which helped him settle the financial losses from his campaign.

This unexpected revelation prompted Senator Katherine Cortez Masto (D-Nev.) to express her reservations about Long’s nomination. Other officials, including Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.), Sheldon Whitehouse (D-R.I.), and Ron Wyden (D-Ore.), have also raised alarms, suggesting that these donations could breach federal anti-bribery regulations.

Concerns regarding Long’s actions warrant his disqualification from leading the IRS. Senators from both parties should be vocal about this troubling potential corruption. It’s crucial for the public to have civil servants who prioritize their responsibilities over personal gain.

The role of IRS leader is vital and should remain above political maneuvering. Taxpayers deserve equitable treatment, and any authority in charge must act fairly in tax collection and enforcement. When someone in such a pivotal role accepts large sums from donors aiming to gain favor, it undermines public trust in government and further diminishes faith in institutions already facing criticism.

Integrity in politics is alarmingly scarce. All elected representatives should uphold the rule of law and demonstrate that those who are meant to serve the public cannot operate above it. At this juncture, we need a renewed commitment to integrity.

For these reasons, senators across the aisle ought to reject Long’s nomination to the IRS. The American people merit better leadership.
