Senators Scott and Johnson Start Inquiry into Palisades Fire; Seek Newsom's 'Support'

Senators Announce Investigation into Palisade Fire

Senators Rick Scott (R-FL) and Ron Johnson (R-WI) revealed on Monday that they would be initiating a Senate investigation regarding the Palisade Fire that occurred in January, urging cooperation from Governor Gavin Newsom.

The fires affecting northwest Los Angeles and areas of Malibu are regarded as one of the most devastating natural disasters in U.S. history. The blaze raged for more than three weeks, resulting in significant damage, including the destruction of nearly 7,000 structures. Notably, the local reservoir ran dry, and both state and local governments did not deploy firefighters in advance. Additionally, law enforcement was absent to facilitate the evacuation efforts.

In their statement, Scott and Johnson said:

Today, U.S. Senate President Rick Scott and HSGAC’s Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations (PSI) Chair Ron Johnson have announced a congressional inquiry into the tragic Palisade fire that devastated the Pacific Palisades community in Los Angeles. This investigation will examine the failures in preparation and response to such a disaster, the unacceptable loss of life, and the destruction of over 6,800 structures, including thousands of homes.

Scott and Johnson assert that the Palisade fire represents more than just a grave tragedy; it signifies a troubling failure by the government to protect its citizens’ lives and properties. The families affected deserve transparency and accountability. As members of the PSI, they are commencing a Congressional investigation to uncover the truth. For years, federal taxpayer dollars have been allocated to California for fire management and disaster preparedness. Yet on the day of the Palisade fire, the reservoirs were depleted, the hydrants were dry, and many innocent people—particularly vulnerable seniors—lost their lives, while thousands more lost their homes and livelihoods. Though we can’t undo the destruction caused by the fire, we are committed to finding answers for the victims, their families, and this community to ensure it doesn’t happen again anywhere in our nation.

In response, Governor Newsom stated that California has implemented some of the most aggressive wildfire response measures in the country and called for Congressional awareness.

Senator Scott expressed his anticipation of Newsom’s “full cooperation” via social media.

Scott recently visited the area, accompanied by local celebrity Spencer Pratt, who also lost his home in the fire, showcasing the impact of the disaster.
