Senior Biden adviser on migration issues to leave White House

President Biden's top adviser on immigration will leave the White House next week after three years on the job.

Katie Tobin, senior director for border affairs at the National Security Council, is leaving the administration as Biden faces criticism for his handling of the southern border and members of Congress struggle to find consensus on immigration. Become.

John Kirby, the White House press secretary for foreign affairs, said Tobin signed the 2022 agreement at the administration's Democracy Summit with other countries and a framework for Western Hemisphere leaders to manage migration flows. He was said to have been a central figure in the planning of the Los Angeles Declaration.

“We will all miss her. She was a great professional and a true public servant in that respect,” Kirby said, adding that Tobin plans to spend more time with her family. He added that he would return to Chicago.

NBC first reported Tobin's impending departure.

Tobin's resignation comes amid a White House conflict with Texas over the handling of the southern border. Texas Governor Greg Abbott (R) has installed razor wire and fencing along the border, blocking Border Patrol access to certain areas.

At the same time, senators have been working for weeks on a legislative deal to address the surge of migrants at the southern border. Biden has said he is willing to make significant compromises on border policy to secure an agreement on border issues and funding for Ukraine.

But House Republicans have said they won't compromise, accusing former President Donald Trump of using immigration to attack Biden on the campaign trail and pressuring Republicans not to accept any deal.
