Senior DOJ official oversees immigration enforcement in Chicago during ‘national emergency’

Acting U.S. Attorney General Emile Bove and the Trump administration's border czar Tom Homan visited Chicago on Sunday, with both sides calling for a “national emergency” caused by the Biden administration's failed immigration policies. He said they are working together in unison.

Bove issued a statement Sunday about steps being taken to address illegal immigration in Chicago and across the country.

“This morning, I had the privilege of observing the department's brave members as they deploy alongside DHS to address the national emergency resulting from four years of immigration policy failures.” . “In Chicago and across the country, the FBI, DEA, ATF, USSMS, and federal prosecutors are working with DHS to secure our borders, stop this invasion, and make America safe again. We support everyone at the state, government, and local levels to join us in this important mission to take back our communities. ”

He also said the Department of Justice (DOJ) and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) will utilize all available tools to combat any interference or unlawful interference with protecting the United States.

“Most importantly, we won't rest until the work is done,” Bove added.

In a video obtained by Fox News, Mr. Homan and Mr. Bove are seen speaking ahead of an immigration rally in Chicago on Sunday. Homan can be heard telling those listening in the video that they are rolling out the first enforcement effort in the nation.

Mr. Bove also spoke and told the enforcement team that it is important to show that DHS is executing operations and that DOJ is in step with them.

He also emphasized the importance of carrying out executions safely and fulfilling the mission President Donald Trump was elected to carry out.

“Today we are implementing his policies, which the American people put him in office to implement,” Bove said.

“The first arrest confirmed by the Deputy Attorney General this morning was of an illegal immigrant who remained in the country despite driving under the influence and causing the death of a 19-year-old woman,” a Justice Department official told Fox News. .

The action comes after Homan warned sanctuary cities across the country that the policy would not prevent deportations and would instead endanger communities, federal employees, and undocumented immigrants.

Sanctuary cities are defined by the policy of not turning over illegal immigrants to federal authorities even if they are arrested. Aliens are then often released back into the community.

Homan last week called on officials in sanctuary cities to cooperate with the “Fox & Friends” effort. “Please work with us. You forced us into the community.”

He continued, “What's going to happen is we're going to find the bad guy, but when we find him, he's going to find someone else who may not be a criminal priority.'' “You'll be with people. But what if they're criminals?” They will also be arrested because the US is doing something illegal. ”

Illinois Attorney General Kwame Raoul was a guest on MSNBC's “The Alex Witt Report” on Sunday and spoke about Bove's visit to Chicago.

“It's not surprising to me that he and others landed in Chicago. They made it clear that Chicago, our state, was going to be a target,” Raul said. “I can't explain exactly what he's doing or what he's going to monitor. But what I can say is that we cooperate with federal law enforcement on many fronts in all types of criminal investigations.” “And we will continue to cooperate.”

“We are not in a position to obstruct proper immigration enforcement. That is the job of the federal government through ICE, and it will be done, and we are not going to interfere with that,” Raoul continued. “What we're up against is state and local resources being used to enforce civilian immigration. We need to clarify the role of federalism in our country and the balance of federal and There's the 10th Amendment to the Constitution, which helps. And there's longstanding Supreme Court precedent that says the federal government can't order state and local governments to do federal work.”
