Senior media executive departs from network during legal battle with Trump

Wendy McMahon Resigns from CBS News and Stations

Wendy McMahon announced her resignation from her role as president and CEO of CBS News and Stations in a memo to staff on Monday. She described the recent months as “challenging” and noted differences in vision regarding the company’s future. This resignation seemingly follows an interview with former vice president Kamala Harris, which has raised questions due to ongoing legal issues involving President Donald Trump, who is suing the network over its “60 Minutes” program.

In her memo, McMahon reflected on her time at CBS, stating, “Today, I am resigning from my position as president and CEO of CBS News and Stations and CBS Media Ventures. This was one of the most meaningful chapters of my career. Leading this extraordinary organization has been a lifelong honor, and I’ve truly enjoyed working with each of you.” She emphasized the team’s dedication to truth and fairness amidst the challenges faced recently.

George Cheeks, the president of Paramount Global, CBS’s parent company, expressed gratitude for McMahon’s leadership over the past four years. He noted that under her guidance, the competitive stance and culture of the television stations improved significantly, leading to a more substantial local news presence. He also mentioned that their streaming news initiatives are expanding with digital extensions for various flagship CBS broadcasts.

In a related context, Trump has filed a $20 billion lawsuit against CBS News, alleging manipulation in the interview with Harris. The suit claims that CBS has misrepresented the administration’s position on Israeli military actions, suggesting that this was a strategic deceptions to benefit Harris’s campaign ahead of the 2024 elections.

Paramount’s controlling shareholder, Shari Redstone, reportedly supports resolving the lawsuit, potentially facilitating a sale of her company to Skydance, according to information from the New York Times. The ongoing legal fracas has already led to the resignation of Bill Owens, the executive producer of “60 Minutes,” who cited a loss of journalistic independence.

Trump has also been vocally critical of CBS, claiming the network has covered him in a “derogatory and defamatory” manner during a two-part report. He has urged the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to revoke CBS News’s license and impose hefty penalties, accusing them of trying to manipulate election outcomes.

In a recent post, Trump stated, “We are extremely honored to sue CBS Fake News, as they must be held accountable for their actions.” He added that, “They should lose their license! Hopefully, the FCC will take appropriate action against their illegal practices.”
