Serena Williams pulls out of Wimbledon doubles due to knee injury

Williams Sisters’ Doubles Return Cut Short by Injury

The anticipated return of the Williams sisters to competitive tennis together was abruptly halted. Serena, who is 44, and Venus made their Grand Slam doubles debut as a duo after nearly four years apart, but Serena had to withdraw from the Wimbledon doubles event. This was due to a knee injury sustained during her recent singles match.

Earlier this week, Serena competed in singles but unfortunately lost in a tough match that went three sets. She expressed her disappointment in an Instagram post, saying, “It’s heartbreaking to have to withdraw from doubles. It’s a gift to be back in the game, and the opportunity to play with @venuswilliams once again meant so much to me. I did everything I could, but unfortunately my knee is not ready to compete.”

In her post, there was an image showing several syringes she said indicated fluid being drained from her knee. Additionally, a video depicted her walking with her right leg elevated, while one of her daughters appeared to be assisting her with a cane.

Despite this setback, with the US Open approaching, Serena hinted that she might return to play elsewhere soon, saying, “All I can say is look at cities near you.”

The sisters were set to face Camila Osorio and Solana Sierra, but this match was the only first-round doubles match not played at the beginning of the week, postponed to allow Serena some recuperation time.

In her major return match, Serena lost 6-3, 6-7 (6), 6-3 to a 20-year-old Australian player, Maya Joynt. Throughout their careers, the Williams sisters have won six titles together at Wimbledon and many other accolades, including 14 Grand Slam titles and three Olympic gold medals, never losing in a final.

It’s indeed disappointing to see them, especially Serena, face these challenges after such a long hiatus, but who knows what the future might hold? Maybe there will be more opportunities ahead.
