Serena Williams Shares Mental Health Journey
In a candid Instagram post on Tuesday, Serena Williams opened up about her mental health, describing August as a particularly tough month that tested her spirit and resilience.
The tennis icon mentioned she lost over 31 pounds on August 21 after using RO, a GLP-1 medication designed for weight loss.
“My dear readers, my summer began on a positive note, but I’ve faced some challenges this August,” Williams, 43, wrote. “Like many, I’ve had moments that tested my mind. Life can feel, well, a bit overwhelming at times. It’s important to take a step back and reconnect with yourself.”
She reflected on her journey, saying, “I’ve discovered that it’s better to focus on resolving problems than letting them linger. I’m learning to let go, even though things aren’t entirely resolved yet.”
Adding a personal touch, she asked, “By the way, how did your summer go?” She also included the hashtag #LadySerenaOfStockTonstreet, referencing her upcoming podcast named “Stockton Street,” which premieres on September 17.
Although the 23-time Grand Slam champion faced some backlash regarding her use of weight loss pills, she looked stunning in a red dress against a backdrop of bookshelves.
Williams did not go into specific details about her struggles, but in a recent interview, her former coach Patrick Mouratoglou recalled their “fights” over her weight. He remarked on how quickly she lost weight, implying that looking back can bring its own complexities.
In a preview clip from her new podcast, Williams emphasized the need for honesty regarding her body, stating, “I realized I needed to be lighter to compete effectively. It was a realization I had to come to terms with.”
Williams, who is a spokesperson for RO, turned to GLP-1 medications after having difficulty maintaining a healthy weight following the births of her daughters, Olympia in 2017 and Adira in 2023.
